Good article on how to book train tickets. Booking tickets is not an easy thing to do even for those who know what they are doing. Great article and well explained.
the IRCTC has recently launched a SMS service which will help traveler to know his and her ticket is confirmed or not
If the ticket is still in waiting list after the chart was prepared, then IRCTC won’t send sms. It will send sms only for confirmed tickets.
From past few years, IRCTC has really done a good work in Indian railways by providing an online portal where users can book tickets, check PNR status, track current train status etc. Lets hope we see more and more improvement in railways.

Great article on booking train tickets. I would suggest using some browser plugins which fills the passenger details automatically when booking ticket in IRCTC site. This saves some time.
